Make your Express Entry file perfect

Make a perfect profile

Presenting yourself truthfully in your Express Entry profile is of utmost importance. Not only can this strategy help you gain additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, but it also shields you from potential penalties related to misrepresentation.

Language Proficiency

Language proficiency is an important factor in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and can contribute to your CRS score, by adding up to 310 points when combined with other factors like higher education. If you’re in a marriage or common-law partnership, this score can rise to 320 points.

Education

Education plays a crucial role in CRS scoring, contributing up to 200 points if your education was done outside of Canada or up to 250 points if you have a post-secondary degree from Canada. You can increase your initial education score by acquiring additional qualifications, like another degree, or by getting more Educational Credential Assessments (ECAs) for existing degrees.

Spouse or Common-law Partner

If you have a spouse or common-law partner, it’s wise to compare your CRS scores as potential principal applicants. In some instances, your partner’s Comprehensive Ranking System score might be higher, making it advantageous for them to be the principal applicant.

Work Experience

Boosting your Comprehensive Ranking Systems core is achievable by acquiring additional work experience or improving the documentation of your current work history. Some jobs that may appear unskilled could involve duties classified as skilled under Canada’s National Occupation Classification (NOC). Looking at your duties against the NOC occupations can help you earn points you might otherwise overlook.

Beyond job titles, the next step is to calculate the duration of each job. Points are awarded for full-time or equivalent part-time work experience. Federal Skilled Worker Class candidates must possess at least one year of continuous, skilled work experience to enter the pool, but non-continuous work experience can also contribute to CRS points.

Job Offers

Applicants who got valid job offers are eligible for an additional 50 or 200 points, based on the job’s category. A job offer in an NOC 0, A, or B level employment improves your CRS score by 50 points, whereas a job offer in a Major Group 00 Senior Management Occupation raises your score by 200 points. These job offers must be in writing and include information about the duties, responsibilities, payment, and other terms of employment.

Work Experience and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

You may be qualified for nomination by one of Canada’s Provincial Nominee Programmes (PNPs) if you have exact evidence of your work history. Candidates for permanent residence through Express Entry who are nominated by a Canadian province are awarded an additional 600 points towards their CRS score. Provinces may be looking for individuals with a certain type of job experience, which you may have but not think useful because it is unrelated to your main line of work.

Prepare in advance for a provincial nomination or an ITA

Everyone in the Express Entry pool should be actively preparing for an ITA or provincial nomination, regardless of their Comprehensive Ranking Systems core.

Even if you only have a CRS score of 299, a provincial nomination might suddenly increase it by 600 points, practically ensuring that you would receive an ITA in the upcoming Express Entry invitation round.

After getting an ITA, candidates only have 60 days to submit their complete application; some PNPs give even less time. You could get it right away after accepting an invitation if you have all the required paperwork ready in advance.
